Casino Estoril sits on the Portuguese coast a short distance from Lisbon, in a resort town that became an unlikely meeting point for diplomats, exiled royals and intelligence officers during the Second World War. Portugal's neutrality made Estoril a rare neutral ground in wartime Europe, and its casino became a social hub where people from opposing sides could be found in the same room. That atmosphere later fed into popular culture, most famously as an influence on Ian Fleming's James Bond novels.

A wartime meeting point

During the war, Estoril's coastline, known as the Portuguese Riviera, attracted a mix of displaced royalty, businesspeople and agents from various intelligence services, drawn partly by Portugal's official neutrality. The casino, opened in the 1930s, offered a public space where such figures could mix socially away from the battlefield, and its combination of glamour and unspoken intrigue gave it a reputation that outlived the war itself.

The Bond connection

Ian Fleming worked in British naval intelligence and is understood to have spent time in Estoril during this period, later drawing on the setting and its wartime atmosphere for his first Bond novel, Casino Royale. While the fictional casino in the book is not a direct copy of Estoril, the resort's mix of elegance and espionage-era history is widely credited as an inspiration, and the connection remains a point of local pride and tourism interest today.

The casino today

Modern Casino Estoril describes itself as one of Europe's largest casinos by gaming floor space, offering a range of table games and slot machines alongside theatre and entertainment programming. As with any casino, the games available are designed around a built-in mathematical advantage for the house, meaning that while individual sessions can go either way, the odds over time favour the operator rather than the player.

Estoril's appeal today rests as much on its history and architecture as on its gaming floor, and many visitors come simply to see the building and stroll the surrounding gardens and coastline. For anyone who does play, it is worth remembering that casino games are a form of entertainment best enjoyed with money set aside for the purpose, not as a way of generating income.
