Sun City sits in a valley of the Pilanesberg region in South Africa's North West province, ringed by an extinct volcanic crater. Opened in 1979 under the vision of hotelier Sol Kerzner, it was conceived as a self-contained resort combining casino gaming, entertainment and later, wildlife tourism, in an area that had few other large-scale attractions at the time.
Building a resort in the bushveld
The original complex, now known as the Sun City Hotel, was later joined by the Cascades, the Cabanas, and, in 1992, the Lost City complex with its centrepiece, the Palace of the Lost City hotel. The Palace was built around a fictional backstory of a lost African civilisation, with its architecture, sculpture and gardens all designed to reinforce that theme.
A man-made rainforest, an artificial beach with a wave pool, and the Valley of Waves water park were added to broaden the resort's appeal beyond gaming, turning Sun City into a multi-day family destination rather than a casino visit alone.
Golf, entertainment and wildlife
The resort is also known for the Gary Player Country Club golf course, which hosted the prestigious Nedbank Golf Challenge for many years and helped raise Sun City's international profile. Its proximity to the Pilanesberg National Park, home to the so-called Big Five animals, means many visitors combine casino entertainment with a safari.
Sun City's casino floor offers the usual mix of table games and slot machines found at large resort casinos worldwide, all operating under the same mathematical principle: the games are designed so that, over time, the odds favour the house.
A balanced way to visit
For travellers, Sun City is best approached as a broad entertainment resort rather than purely a gambling trip, given the range of non-gaming attractions on site. Anyone who does play is encouraged to set a firm budget beforehand and treat the outcome as the cost of entertainment, not an investment.
If gambling ever starts to feel like a problem rather than a leisure activity, support organisations exist in most countries and are worth contacting early.
